In the Stories of Grades K–5 ebook, you will read the stories of the mathematics of each course of IM K–5 Math, detailed by authors of the curriculum. These stories convey the coherent structure of grade-level content, how concepts are developed for students, and the deliberate choice of tools and representations used in each grade, from kindergarten through grade 5. You will also learn about key design features of IM K–5 Math, including structures to develop strong math communities, instructional routines to invite all students to think deeply about math concepts, and teacher reflection prompts to support responsive instruction.

About the Presentation
High-quality instructional materials are key to ensuring that every student receives equitable instruction. During this session you will learn how the IM K–12 Math curriculum offers teachers tools to engage all students in grade-level content, affirm their identities through mathematically and culturally relevant lessons, and implement culturally responsive pedagogy. We will highlight features of the curriculum that align with UnboundEd’s GLEAM instructional framework, and offer time for participants to ask questions of members of our curriculum, product, and professional learning teams.
About the Presenter
Dr. LaToya Byrd is the Director of Professional Learning Implementation and Talent at Illustrative Mathematics. Dr. Byrd holds a bachelors, masters, and doctorate all from Georgia State University, and her research focuses on the experiences of teachers implementing culturally responsive teaching practices within elementary mathematics classrooms. She believes that culturally responsive teaching combined with fun, number sense, and conceptual understanding leads to learning for all students.
